Puzzled by some of expressions Gen Z kids are using? We asked our teachers some of the slang they’re hearing this school year. Topping the list:

  • Lowkey
  • Sigma
  • Bruh
  • Mewing (along with the facial expression)
  • Rizz
  • Demure
  • Twin
  • Bunko
  • Yap/Yapper/Yapping
  • Cap

Before you roll your eyes at this…don’t forget the goofy slang your generation was spewing:

Millennials

  • Adulting
  • Swol
  • Bae
  • Slay
  • Shipping
  • Ghosted
  • FOMO
  • Actually and Literally (not exactly slang, but Millennials felt compelled to include one in literally every sentence)

Gen X

  • Dude (regardless of the gender of the person)
  • Gnarly
  • Chill Pill
  • My Bad
  • Trippin
  • Phat
  • Bogus
  • Yuppy
  • Hella
  • Whatever

Boomers

  • Split
  • Dig It
  • Right On
  • Square
  • Peace Out
  • Groovy
  • Grody
  • Threads
  • Don’t Have a Cow

Throughout history, slang has been a way for teens to differentiate themselves from adults and feel more connected with their peers. Thanks to search engines, adults can quickly look up the meaning of the words and phrases so we don’t seem completely cringy.
